Stranger Love follows two lovers whose romance unfolds to the rhythm of the seasons: in springtime, they meet; in summer, their love flourishes; autumn and winter, they face threats from without and within; a second spring brings resignation and the chance for renewal. Over time the frame broadens to offer an archetypal picture of human love, and ultimately, an astral envisioning of the divine, a love supreme. Stranger Love is inspired by the writings of Plato and Octavio Paz and is scored for a 28-piece orchestra (including three microtonal pianos). This work-in-progress concert of Act 1 unfolds across an expansive time-scale of over four hours, allowing the audience to come in and out at will. Stranger Love is a grand celebration of life itself, evoking the visceral thrill of a gospel revival, the ethereal calm of watching snow fall, the wonder of staring into the night sky. Buy Tickets

08/10/17 SELMA with live score by Jason Moran | Wordless Music Orchestra Brooklyn, New York Prospect Park Bandshell United States

Spring 1965: in defiance of segregationist repression, a march was organized along the highway from Selma, Alabama to the state capital Montgomery. Among the organizers were Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lewis, who continues to be a beacon of light in the U.S. House of Representatives (Georgia). The resistance contributed to the passage of the Voting Rights Act later that year, and is considered one of our nation’s great victories for organized protest. The 2014 Oscar-winning historical drama SELMA tells the inspiring story of the march. A.O. Scott wrote in The New York Times, “I have rarely seen a historical film that felt so populous and full of life, so alert to the tendrils of narrative that spread beyond the frame.”

MacArthur “genius” and jazz pianist JASON MORAN joins WORDLESS MUSIC ORCHESTRA to provide an original live score to the film. Moran is a luminary of modern jazz, with a knack for inviting you to hang onto every musical phrase and subtlety. The New York Times writes, “Moran has his own sense of touch and rhythm and harmony, rounded and forgiving rather than pinpointed; it lets you in.” Youngsters BROOKLYN UNITED MARCHING BAND parade to open.

08/04/17 CREED with live score | Wordless Music Orchestra Brooklyn, New York Prospect Park Bandshell United States
Time: 7:30pm. Admission: Free. Age restrictions: All Ages. Thirty-nine years after the classic drama Rocky first hit theaters, the seventh installment CREED (2015) breathes new life into this story of underdogs and redemption. Starring Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan, the film has been hailed as “an invigorating piece of nostalgia.” (The Atlantic) Stallone was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, his first since the original film.

Brooklyn collective WORDLESS MUSIC ORCHESTRA, conducted onstage by the score’s composer, Ludwig Goransson, performs the original score live along with the film. The orchestra has gained notoriety and acclaim for its unconventional programming, blurring the lines between contemporary classical music, indie rock, and electronica. Alex Ross of The New York Times said, simply, “At the moment, there is no more inventive music series in New York.” They return after their sensational rendition of the Beasts of the Southern Wild score in 2013.

01/16/16 Winter Jazzfest NYC: Mivos Quartet + Dan Blake New York, New York SubCulture United States
Time: 7:00pm. Age restrictions: All Ages/Licensed. Address: 45 Bleeker Street. The Dust Moves, composed and animated by composer/saxophonist Dan Blake and featuring the Mivos Quartet, is based on the famous Buddhist tale of enlightenment in which a monk saw dust floating in a door frame bathed in light, realizing the profound stillness that surrounded that dust. This imagining of stillness within motion is a guiding metaphor for the work, which presents a series of simple yet compellingly introspective animations narrated by a highly interactive and genre-bending. This work was made possible by the Jerome Fund for New Music and New Music USA. It is the result of a rich collaboration that blurs the boundaries between new music and free improvisation.
